Can't help but think that soon it will be my time. My time to depart. You hear about all these public figures, artists, idols or merely people that you grew along to their art and music, wished one day you could emulate and maybe even follow not in their footsteps but rather along.
Just about a week ago David Bowie passed away at the age of 69. I knew a song or two of him that I liked and now I just found out about Glenn Frey passing yesterday January 18. Now I feel a little sad about the latter's if only because the songs of The Eagles are well rooted in me.
I began listening to The Eagles back in 1976-1977, barely a year in this country. I was 16 years old.
But unlike most people's introduction to The Eagles music, mine are a little, shall we say peculiar?
At the suggestion of this lady who was teaching my sister and I basic english lessons as a second language, I started listening to the music that at that time was playing on the radio and I got hooked on The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and Jefferson Airplane. At that time there was also a magazine called The Hit Parader that published the lyrics of the songs of the moment and that was how I would learn what Glenn Frey and Don Henley were singing with such passion. A New Kid In Town and Hotel California are forever burned in my memory. Now, I've always loved music all, or most genres and I learned to like Styx, The Bee Gees, Billy Joel and all R & B and Motown music. I listened to artist that turned out to be a One-hit wonders but that at the time were at the top of the charts in popularity.
But I have always returned to The Eagles, in fact if you ask any of my three children grown up now, what music do they remember Dad playing in the car stereo or listening in the house they vouch that my choices are rooted in the late 70's and early 80's. Even though The Eagles broke up in 1980, their music never stop emanating from radio stations and jukeboxes everywhere.
Rest in peace Glenn Frey and thanks for the music, never saw you in concert but will probably meet you when my time comes to leave this earth.
Now I cannot finish this entry without listing my Glenn Frey favorite tunes:
- Take it easy
- New Kid in town
- Lyin' eyes
- Hotel California
- Peaceful, easy feeling
- Already gone
- Heartache tonight
- Seven Bridges Road
- The heat is on
